Combining contemporary and urban dance, capoeira, and martial arts with powerful imagery, dancers defy gravity in a strikingly original performance. Inspired by Yasmina Khadra’s novel What the Day Owes to the Night, choreographer Hervé Koubi traces his own personal lineage as a French-Algerian artist. After discovering his family’s Algerian roots, he returned to the country of his ancestors to collaborate with street dancers from across the Mediterranean. The result is a meditative yet athletic work exploring the ties that bind us. Named after the “invincible sun” deity, Sol Invictus upholds love as a force for of peace and unity. The score features music by Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson, along with excerpts by Steve Reich and digital composer Maxime Bodson. “I want to talk about light, solidarity, and those bonds that unite us.
