Camp Ramayana is a deep dive in South Asian dance, storytelling, acting, martial arts, yoga, mask making, graphic epic writing. Through the classic literary epic, the Ramayana, campers learn how to bring a hero's journey to stage. Whether leaping into a battle under the instruction of world renowned Thang Ta martial artist Master Khilton or learning to use rhythm to build a floating bridge with Kuchipudi legend Nilimma Devi, they learn skills for life while having enormous fun.
Throughout the program, campers meet local artisans and ecologists to learn about arts and sustainability as a living tradition, and to broaden their horizons with arts and sciences from different cultures. At the end of the month, they embark on staging their own version of the Ramayana, ending in a celebratory performance with live music, and an arts and crafts show for family and friends.
Sutradhar’s summer camp has been a key intergenerational gateway to these sacred arts, and many of our community members cite it as an irreplaceable, holistic, and joyful educational experience that shaped their childhoods. All campers are welcomed, encouraged, and supported as young artists long after camp ends.
